The first ever WIN Vacation Bible School of the kid’s ministry happened last August 14, 2018, held at Mount Saint Vincent University Dining Hall, 166 Bedford Highway, Halifax. VBS is a week-long ministry outreach that happens during the summer season. The purpose of this event is to connect with the children and their families in the community. This is meant to bring in kids who don’t normally attend church and to teach them the gospel.
A summer full of fun and exciting activities were prepared to help them know Jesus more. The theme this year is to let them learn to accept Jesus as their Lord God and Savior. They need to know that Jesus loves them and what is his purpose in their lives.
The program was started with a prayer led by teacher Geneva, followed by a short praise and worship that is led by teacher Princess, the worship leader coupled with action songs led by teacher Jacob.
The next part was the fun packed games that encouraged them and gave them enjoyment. They were divided into two groups: Group one is for the ages 2-6 years old and group 2 two is for ages 7-13 years old. They played “the boat is sinking”, “Hot Potato”, “Ulan, Bagyo and Lindol” that is led by teacher Abby and teacher Princess.
“Jesus loves them”, this is the first thing that they must know. The lesson was first started with a small skit by teacher Alyanna that is played by teacher Jacob as Chuck, the lifeguard, and teacher Abby as Caroline, the girl swimmer. The story is about Chuck who is guarding the pool when Caroline attempts to jump into the water, yet Chuck stopped her and asked her to use the stairs to get into the water. Caroline argued with Chuck that it is better to dive into the water rather than taking the stairs slowly because that’s how she rolls and that’s how she does everything even with Jesus. Even though she doesn’t know about Jesus that much but she still dives in because she knows that Jesus has plans for her like telling other people that Jesus loves them. The Children were taught that no matter what nation, color, status, or state they are in, Jesus still loves them.
The next lecture that was taught by teacher Geneva is about knowing their purpose and that it should be with God. It was taken in Luke 5:1-11 entitled “Calling the First Disciples” with the Memory Verse: “Repent, turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord” from Acts 3:19. One day, Jesus is walking in the shore of the Sea of Galilee and many people came to see him preaching the word. He then saw the boat of Peter and asked if he can get in and preached to the people in the shore. While they went farther in the sea, he asked Peter to put down his net, and Peter said they weren’t able to get any fish last night so there is no way that there will be fish in the sea. But he still obeyed and put down the net because he believed in Jesus. After he put down the net it was filled with plenty of fish that the net can’t hold it. Then Peter bows down to God and said “Go away, I am a sinful man”, Jesus replied, “Don’t be afraid, come with me and I will show you how to fish people.” The moral of the story is to not be afraid because God is with us all the time. Some people take forever getting into the pool one inch at a time, while others dive right in. When we dive right in with Jesus, he gives joy and purpose in our lives.
“We are all sinners, nobody is perfect”. The children were taught that we all make mistakes and we need to pray to God that he will forgive our sins. Teacher Ailyn educated the kids what are the good and bad things and what to do and what not to.
The VBS ended with a prayer led by teacher Justin. Small snacks and beverages were given by the mommies of the church. It was indeed a successful event and a great privilege knowing that the children are filled with joy and energy to learn more about God.
